Professional Engineer—Residential Structural Inspections
Overview
Schroeder Engineering is hiring a Professional Engineer (licensed or eligible to be licensed) to perform residential structural inspections in the Kansas City metro.
This is a field-focused role. You will spend most of your time looking at real homes around the metro, evaluating signs of structural stress, and explaining your findings in plain language to our clients, both verbally and in writing.
Each house is a bit of a puzzle, and your job will be observing and piecing together clues to determine the full foundation story. Your unbiased assessments will help our clients make big decisions about their homes (current or prospective). Our engineers typically do 3-5 inspections per day and send written reports within 24 hours. Because the work is inherently divided into these discrete units, each “job” is done within 24 hours, and the work does not accumulate after hours or while on vacation—you are truly “off” at the end of the work week.
Additionally, because the work is divided into discrete units, we have flexibility to tailor the role to your desired schedule. Whether you are looking for part time, a standard 40-hour week, or more, we can structure the role accordingly. Compensation is either salary or unit-based and generally works out to be in the range of $60-80 per hour (plus benefits—see below), with the target being the upper end of that range once fully trained.
A civil / structural background is helpful, but not necessary. Prior residential inspection experience is not required. If you have an observant eye and strong problem solving skills, we can train you on our robust inspection process.
In sum, we are looking for a licensed P.E. (or engineer eligible for licensing) who values the following:
Field work (roughly 75/25 split between field and desk work)
Variety (we see everything from city dwellings to rural farmhouses, starter homes to million-dollar mansions, new construction to historic landmarks, all over the metro)
Practical problem solving (piece together signs of structural stress to tell the full story)
Meaningful work with direct client interface (check out our reviews on Google to hear from our clients)
Discrete, finite work units (each job is completed within 24 hours, from start to finish; you are truly “off” at the end of the work week)
Flexibility (hours per week can be tailored to desired schedule)
Qualifications / Skills Required
Bachelor’s degree in engineering
Professional engineering license (or eligible for licensing)
Work well independently
Technical aptitude with willingness to learn this niche field
Observant eye and practical problem solving skills (you notice things that are “off”)
Strong verbal and written communication skills (both technical and plain language)
Friendly and professional demeanor
Comfortable with physical aspects of driving around the metro and inspecting home interiors and exteriors in ordinary Kansas City weather
